Хронологически именно на территории Якутии завершились последние бои Гражданской войны на Дальнем Востоке и в целом по стране. Сибирская добровольческая дружина генерал-лейтенанта А.Н. Пепеляева, сформированная из колчаковских частей в Китае, прибыла на Север по приглашению представителей якутского повстанческого движения в расчете на массовую поддержку мятежников-якутов и дальнейшее продвижение вглубь России. Планировалось после ликвидации власти коммунистов всенародно избрать Земский собор, определивший бы в будущем форму правления. Экспедиции Пепеляева оказали посильную помощь якутские эмигранты, белогвардейское правительство Приморья и иностранные торговые компании. Военные неудачи и отсутствие массовой поддержки со стороны якутского населения и интеллигенции способствовали провалу плана по захвату г. Якутска и дальнейшему наступлению в Сибирь. Командование вооруженными силами Якутской АССР под руководством К.К. Байкалова подготовило и нанесло сокрушительное поражение пепеляевцам. Военная кампания нанесла значительный ущерб народному хозяйству республики, привела к существенным боевым потерям с обеих сторон. И красные, и дружинники Пепеляева в расчете на перетягивание симпатий народа не прибегали к массовым карательным акциям, за исключением отдельных эксцессов.
